Castor Oil for Hair Growth

Castor oil has been used since ancient times for a whole host of problems from wart removal to thinning hair.
It is a thick sticky oil that is being highly touted as a hair growth miracle. In fact, in my opinion, castor oil might be the number one oil for hair growth. It is rich in nutrients such as vitamin E, protein, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and a special acid known as ricinoleic acid that are all purported to support healthy hair growth.

Castor oil also fosters growth of healthy hair because of its strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that fight off irritants and germs that cause scalp infection. Scalp conditions such as fungal infections, dandruff, inflammation and other issues can lead to thinning hair. Castor oil helps keep the scalp healthy and well-functioning and in this way, it promotes long luscious hair growth.

How to Use Castor Oil for Hair Growth

The best way to use castor oil for hair growth is by making a hair growth blend/serum with it.

Though you can use it on its own, it’s good to mix castor oil up with another oil of a lighter consistency since it is very thick and sticky for application. Oils I like mixing up with castor oil are:

  • coconut oil,
  • black seed oil,
  • jojoba oil
  • olive oil and
  • grapeseed oil.

To boost hair growth by miles, also add essential oils good for hair growth such as:

  • rosemary oil,
  • lavender oil,
  • thyme oil and
  • cedarwood oil

You only need to add a few drops of essential oils to your castor oil mix because they are highly concentrated. For every 1 tsp of castor oil, add just 1-2 drops of essential oil.

“How Often Should I Use Castor Oil for Hair Growth?”

Use castor oil for hair growth just 1-2 times a week. It’s best to apply it as an overnight hair treatment then wash it off very well the next morning with a natural sulfate-free shampoo.

You don’t need to apply castor oil more than the times mentioned above because it is a very effective treatment for hair growth.

Plus, it is sticky and leaves your hair feeling greasy so you must wash your hair after every application. And if you apply castor oil too frequently, then you have to wash your hair often which is not good because for healthy hair, you should limit washing hair to at most every two days. Washing your hair very frequently is going to keep stripping off the natural oils needed for healthy hair production!

Where to Get Castor Oil for Hair Growth

If you are serious about hair growth, don’t settle for anything less than pure, unrefined, HEXANE-FREE and organic castor oil like this one from Sky Organics.

Where to Get Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) for Hair Growth

You can also test out JBCO for extreme hair growth. You can find it at your local supermarket but I like to get the Tropical Isle Living’s brand from Amazon: Tropical Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

You’re right, Sara. The only thing the article or any of these other commenters talk about are adding a few drops of essential oil. Nothing about the mixture of castor oil to another oil, like coconut oil, to thin it for easier use.

Can you use Jamaican Black Castor Oil without any other oils? The reason why I ask is because I recently bought me a bottle of some & I am thinking about using it tomorrow. I just washed my hair & I wore it in braids but I took them out so it (my hair) can be washed.

Actually, I use Haitian Black Castor oil and I apply it to my scalp every night and massage it in and apply it to the length of my hair. My hair is high density and high porosity with fine strands. Haitian black castor oil isn’t as thick as Jamaican castor oil so I find it’s better for daily use as long as you wash your hair weekly or bi weekly

So many people are oblivious to the fact that shampoos that grow your hair fast (obviously with no sulfates, no parabens, no DEA) exist. We all are now able to have longer hair and attain more options. Surely worth researching.

When you’re looking into hair loss, hair damage, avoiding skin disorders, hair growth, hair and scalp health more often than not, very similar thoughts come to mind.

Generally, you should try to stay away from hair products and treatments that use chemicals such as parabens, DEA and sulfates.

What’s good for your hair is good for your skin all the same.

It goes without saying the content on this page is so useful for many reasons. It steers away from the common mistakes and errors most fall into- using defective alternatives. Thank you so much!

Irene, Thanks for the information of how much essentials oil to oils, has set my mind at rest of adding essentials rosemary oil to natural shampoos. I do use castor oil and aloe vero in my hair care treatment and found it helpfull. Will buy the Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

I use equal parts of castor oil, vitamine oil and Q 10. add Shea Butter and mix well. Use a small amount as it is oily but great for dry and aged skin. It’s a great skin hydrayer.

I’ve used coconut oil on my hair several times, but it’s so hard to wash out. I’d like to try castor oil but I’m so afraid I won’t be able to get it out. Apple cider vinegar made it fall out in gobs. I do use an egg wash sometimes. It just comes out flat with no body. I’ll try one of your masks & see if it helps. I have very thin fine hair & now an itchy dry scalp issue.
