Mixing shea butter with essential oils may be something that never occurred to you before. If that’s the case, I’m excited to introduce to you the world of SHEA BUTTER AND ESSENTIAL OILS! When you put these 2 together, you are taking your skin care/hair care to a totally different level!
Shea Butter + Essential Oils = Miraculous Benefits
Mixing shea butter and essential oils is nothing short of miraculous, I tell you! Shea butter is an incredible emollient, making it one of the best moisturizers on the face of the earth. What’s more, it’s a great remedy for all sorts of skin conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. Shea butter is also amazing at healing burns, reducing blemishes, minimizing the appearance of scars and more!
Now, enter essential oils – highly concentrated essences of pure plant material, which are overflowing with antioxidants and other compounds that can heal skin, hair and nails with just a few drops. Mix these two heavy weights of nature and you’ve got something very powerful in your hands. Mixing shea butter with essential oils can open up doors in skin care that you never even knew you existed.
Why Mix Shea Butter with Essential Oils
There many reasons you may want to mix shea butter with essential oils. Some of these include:
→ Raw shea butter has a strong nutty smell – Not many take a liking to the strong, noticeably nutty aroma of raw shea butter, especially beginners. Using essential oils is a great way to mask the smell of the raw butter, which may be off-putting to some.
→ Refined shea butter has no smell – Meanwhile, refined shea butter is deodorized and bleached, so it has no smell at all. You can add a variety of essential oils to give your refined shea butter different exciting flavors.
→ Using shea butter as a carrier – Essential oils are highly concentrated. Thus, they must be diluted with a carrier oil/butter before use. Shea butter is a lovely choice for a carrier to dilute the potency of essential oils.
→ To enjoy the benefits of essential oils – Adding essential oils to shea butter steps up the oomph factor of the butter by umpteen times. Instead of using plain shea butter on your body, why not perk it up with beneficial and healing essential oils?
→ To make your own beauty products – Simply mixing shea butter with essential oils can lead to whole new variety of products! For instance, you can make an acne cream by mixing shea with tea tree oil. Also, you can make an anti-aging cream by mixing shea with frankincense oil. In fact, you can even make massage cream by mixing shea butter with lemongrass oil. The possibilities are endless!
Without further adieu, let’s explore some of the best essential oils you can mix with both raw and refined shea butter.
The Best Essential Oils to Blend with Shea Butter
Note: The correct dilution of essential oils in shea butter is 2%. That means for every 1 tsp of shea butter, add 2 drops of essential oil. You can add up to 5 drops but 2 drops is the safest amount.
1. Lavender Essential Oil – Perhaps the best known essential oil on the list, lavender has a clean, fresh and powdery scent that works well with raw shea butter. It has calming properties that are sure to relax you after a stressful day. Lavender essential oil is a powerful disinfectant and is highly antimicrobial, anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiseptic, making it a great choice for those prone to acne and pimples. However, lavender tends to dry the skin. So when combined with rich and creamy shea butter, it deeply hydrates and moisturizes the skin.
2. Geranium Essential Oil – As you know, geranium essential oil is my all time favorite essential oil for the skin. This floral oil is literally an elixir for all sorts of skin complaints, including premature aging and hormonal acne. Further, it prevents sun damage, inflammation, puffiness and more. It has a beautiful, feminine and floral scent that combines cordially with shea butter. Geranium oil is particularly good for female issues. It helps correct hormone imbalance-related problems.
3. Lemongrass Essential Oil – Sporting a sharp, lemony and herby scent, lemongrass essential oil is just the thing for sore, tired muscles. Blend with shea to make an invigorating massage cream that penetrates deep into the muscles and joints. It will relieve muscle pulls, strains and stiffness. Lemongrass oil is particularly rich in vitamins A and E. This makes it a wonderful essential oil for skin conditions like acne, blemishes, scarring and more.
4. Rosemary Essential Oil – When it comes to hair, rosemary essential oil is the first thing I think about. It has a strong, herbal and almost minty scent. Add rosemary oil to hair milks, hair conditioners, shampoo and hair masks. This will combat hair fall, stimulate hair growth and strengthen hair follicles and strands.
5. Frankincense Essential Oil – One of the most ancient oils known to man, frankincense has a musky, woody scent. It can be used to make shea butter lotions that will leave a mystical and mysterious scent on your body. Frankincense essential oil can be used on both facial and bodily skin to ward off wrinkles, fight warts and hyperpigmentation, reduce scarring and to keep the acne at bay.
There are so many more essential oils that you can pair with shea butter. Remember, you can use more than one essential oil in your shea to create new scent profiles with different benefits. What are your favorite essential oil combinations with shea butter? I’d love to know in the comments below!

I did not read any measurements for the usage of Shea Butter and Essential oils. Please advise. Thanks.
Hi,
The measurement is add 2 drops of essential oil for every teaspoon of shea butter. That is a 2% dilution rate which is the standard recommended dilution rate for adults.
For children it is 1 drop of essential oil for every teaspoon of shea butter (1% dilution rate).
