Reverse the Clock | Essential Oils for Aging Skin

Reverse the clock with these top 7 essential oils for aging skin!

Reverse the clock with these top 7 essential oils for aging skin!

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic oils extracted from different parts of trees & plants like the flowers, fruits and barks. They are very potent and offer a myriad of beauty benefits for skin, hair and the general body. One of the numerous benefits of essential oils for mature skin is that they help deliver nutrients without clogging up the pores, unlike many anti aging over-the-counter creams and serums.

Causes of Premature Aging of Skin

While using essential oils for aging skin, be sure to also implement lifestyle changes and habits that will help delay the formation of fine lines and wrinkles from a young age. Give up harmful habits that cause dull tired and aged looking skin such as smoking and alcohol consumption, among others. Here are other causes of premature aging of skin:

  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Poor diet (lacking in antioxidant-rich foods and nutrients such as omega fatty acids)

7 Best Essential Oils for Aging Skin

The essential oils listed below have great anti-aging properties including improving circulation, stimulating hormones, tightening and lifting the skin, regeneration of skin cells, lightening age spots, delaying wrinkles & fine lines as well as rejuvenating tired and dull looking mature skin. You can use these essential oils for aging skin as part of your night time skin care treatment as this is the time your skin repairs itself.

1. Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil is one of my best essential oils for hair. It smells absolutely gorgeous too!

With its beautiful flowery scent, geranium essential oil is one of my favorite essential oils for both skin and hair. Its natural astringent effects tighten skin thereby reducing large pores, regulating sebum as well as toning & firming aging skin. This essential oil also promotes cell renewal and proper blood circulation. Geranium essential oil offers antioxidant protection which steers away oxygen stealing free radicals that degenerate healthy skin cells. Mix about 10 drops of geranium essential oil into your bath water to lighten as well as protect your skin from age spots and dark marks. My mom uses aloe vera on her skin as part of her night skin care routine and she recently started mixing it with geranium essential oil.

5. Rose Essential Oil

Rose essential oil is one of the most amazing essential oils for aging skin and women’s skin in general. It is revered for its flowery and romantic scent and promotes healing and improves circulation. Store this in a glass container and apply a pea-sized amount on your skin as a moisturizing cream to rejuvenate your skin.

6. Myrrh Essential Oil

Free radical damage is the major cause of premature aging including the development of fine lines and wrinkles at an early age. Free radicals act by stealing oxygen from healthy skin cells thereby rendering them dull and lifeless and this forms wrinkles and sagging skin. Myrrh essential oil can be used topically to smooth out aging skin and prevent under eye wrinkles from forming.

Carrot seed essential oil is rich in nourishing compounds and powerful antioxidants such as carotenoids that protect the skin from sun damage and delay signs of aging. This amazing essential oil is great for aging skin as it contains antioxidant properties that defend the skin from free radicals and also provide a rejuvenating effect that improves the tone & appearance of aging skin. Carrot seed essential oil  tightens the skin and promotes cell regeneration.

Take Care

  • Essential oils are very potent and might cause irritation if not used in the right way. Do not use the essential oils ‘neat’ onto your skin. Rather, first mix them with a carrier oil for example wheat germ oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil or rose hip oil before use. Dilute 2 drops of essential oil in 1 tsp of carrier oil. Read more here: How to Dilute Essential Oils
  • Please make sure to purchase high quality and 100% pure essential oils for your body.
  • If you are pregnant or lactating, avoid essential oils. Or, please first consult with your health care practitioner first.

hello Hello BeautyMunsta 🙂 I wanted to also ask, can you add the oils to your skin around/on your eye area? or is it much to potent for this area of skin? also what would you recommend to also minimize the eye bags? Thank Y 🙂

Hi there :). LOVE the article. I would just like to know – I’ve been applying Geranium oil underneath my eyes & it burns SO bad that my eyes actually start watering… What would you recommend I do? Mix it into my cream or something? Lol. I’m so scared it will worsen the wrinkles. 🙁

Please dear T_Cat, you have got to dilute the geranium oil before applying! Yes, mix it in a cream first or you can make this quick serum: place 2 tbsp of pure aloe vera gel in a small container then mix in 4 drops of geranium essential oil and use that instead. Essential oils must always be diluted before application to avoid skin irritations and severe burning. As a rule of thumb, dilute about 1 to 5 drops in 1 tbsp of carrier oil.

From what I understand Sweet Orange is the only citrus oil that doesn’t cause photosensitization, or phototoxicity.

    2 TBS Apricot Kernel oil
    20 drops Carrot Seed oil
    15 drops Sandalwood oil
    10 drops Frankincense oil
    15 drops Lavender oil
    20 drops Geranium oil
    20 drops Rosehip Seed oil

Hey Richard, sorry for the late reply! That’s a good recipe except I find that it has way too much essential oils added. You’d want to make a 2% essential oil dilution, which is the recommended dilution rate for adults and use in daily skin care. That means 2 drops of essential oil per 1 tsp of carrier oil. Since your recipe has 15 tsp (1 tbsp has 3 tsp) of carrier oil, then you’d add 30 drops of essential oils. You should add more carrier oil to you recipe. Tell me how it goes! 🙂

Hi. I hope you’re still there. I’m not sure the age of the post. I was wondering if I could alter the anti aging serum (that includes carrot seed) and replace the apricot kernel oil with raw shea and replace the lemon with rose for a night time cream?

Yes you can use those substitutes if they suit your skin better! 🙂
