And the best part is you can easily make your own right at home. You only need just three ingredients to make this brown sugar shea butter scrub recipe and you can even forego adding the essential oil and you’ll still remain with a sweet smelling homemade scrub. In this scrub recipe, I’ve used shea butter as the base ingredient, brown sugar as the abrasive ingredient and orange essential oil for an exciting citrusy scent. Now let’s look at the benefits of each ingredient we’ll be using in the shea butter scrub recipe:
Beauty Benefits of Brown Sugar
Brown sugar is the mild abrasive ingredient in this shea butter face scrub. It is much softer and gentler on the skin than regular sugars that can scratch the skin and cause microscopic tears. It is also rich in glycolic acid, which is an AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) that is known to fight off germs and bacteria and keep skin looking youthful. The mild rough texture of brown sugar will help gently scrounge off dead cells, dirt, grime and excess oils that can clog pores and cause acne & black heads.
Benefits of Shea Butter for Skin
Being a great emollient, shea butter will help moisturize, lubricate and plump up dehydrated and dull looking skin. What makes it a good emollient is its rich fatty acids including oleic, linoleic, stearic & palmitic acids that have skin healing and protective properties that will promote problem-free skin. Shea butter also contains a chock-full of vitamin E, which along with the fatty acids, will help soothe any skin inflammation or irritation which may be caused by acne, rashes or inflammatory skin conditions.
Benefits of Orange Essential Oil for Skin
Derived from the naturals oils found in orange peels, orange essential oil has many benefits for skin including rejuvenating dull and tired skin. It contains powerful anti inflammatory properties that will calm any skin inflammation and its antiseptic properties make it one of the top essential oils for acne treatment. Orange essential oil is also great for fighting premature aging as it has been shown to increase the ability to absorb vitamin C and boost collagen production.
Now that we know the amazing benefits of each ingredient to be used in this brown sugar shea butter scrub recipe, let’s get to the real business – making this exciting citrusy scrub! Note: Please use caution when using orange essential oil because it is a photosensitive essential oil!
