Locs need moisturizing or they’ll become as dry as a desert. Anyone who’s ever had locs must know how frustrating dry locs can be. But fortunately, you can make yourself DIY shea butter recipes for locs. That way, you won’t have to use commercial products which contain a slew of chemical ingredients that can leave residue when they build up.
Of course, anything you apply on your locs will build-up overtime if you don’t properly wash them out. Even shea butter. In fact, shea butter can lead to really clogged up locs because it is a thick and waxy substance that can get trapped inside.

1. Homemade Dreadlocks Cream for Dry Locs
What you need
- 1 oz shea butter (where to get it)
- 1 oz coconut oil (where to get it)
- 1 oz olive oil (where to get it)
- 10 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil, sandalwood essential oil or lemon essential oil
- Pyrex measuring cup (where to get it)
- Double boiler (where to get it)
- Immersion blender (where to get it)
- Clean storage container (where to get it)
Directions
- Melt the shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil together in a double boiler.
- Once melted, pour it into a Pyrex measuring cup and place it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to cool down and turn into an opaque partially solidified mixture.
- Get it out and whisk using an immersion blender.
- Add the essential oils and whisk again until it gets white and fluffy.
- Transfer cream into a clean container and store in a cool dry place.
- To use, first spray some water on your hair using a spray bottle. Then use a suitable amount of the cream to seal moisture into dry locs.
2. Homemade Dreadlocks Conditioning Spray
What you need
- 1 cup distilled water (where to get it)
- 1 tsp shea butter (where to get it)
- 15 drops lavender essential oil (where to get it)
- Pyrex measuring cup (where to get it)
- 8 oz amber spray bottle (where to get it)
Directions
- Place the distilled water in a Pyrex measuring cup then heat it up until warm. Do not over heat.
- Now add the shea butter and lavender essential oil.
- Pour the mixture into an amber spray bottle and shake well.
- Spray all over dreads and scalp for moisturized pleasant scented locs. Use as often as you’d like.
Dreadlocks aren’t supposed to be washed that regularly but to prevent growth of icky stuff (including mold!), wash them often. You can wash them every after three days or once a week, anything that suits you.
