Uses of Citrus Oils
- Direct application: You can use citrus oils straight on your skin (but make sure to patch test on your arm first). Since these oils are diluted in carrier oil, they are safe to use directly on skin, unlike essential oils. Citrus oils are still potent and effective in addressing your skin concerns, yet also mild enough to apply to skin.
- Natural fragrance: If you are allergic to perfumes, or looking to cut out toxic products, you can use citrus oils as a natural fragrance since they actually smell so good and uplifting!
- Natural deodorant: Citrus oils are excellent deodorizers! Not only are they antibacterial, but also smell refreshing and cancel out body odors. Use citrus oil as deodorant by applying directly onto your armpits.
- Mix into body butters: Do you make your own body butters and lotions just like me? Instead of essential oils or artificial fragrance, you can use citrus oil to flavor your body butters and make them oh-so-scrumptious! Sweet orange oil goes so well with shea butter!
- Hair oil: To promote hair growth, simply apply citrus oil onto your scalp and massage for 5 minutes. You can also combine your citrus oils with rosemary oil or castor oil to make more complex and beneficial hair oils.
- Dandruff: Citrus oils, particularly lemon oil, are a potent remedy for dandruff.
How to Make Orange Oil
The first citrus oil I ever made was orange oil. We got 50 pounds of amazing juice oranges from my grandad’s orchard, and we just didn’t know what to do with them. I extracted the juice of half of the oranges and froze them. Next I made orange peel powder, which also has so many beauty benefits. Finally it occurred to me that I should make orange oil, and make orange oil I did! It was one of the best experiences of my life. The scent that dispersed when grating the oranges will forever live in my mind – it was just so uplifting, made me so happy for no reason, and cured my depression for a good 2 weeks!
Ingredients
- 6 large oranges
- 100g of grapeseed oil
Directions
- Wash your oranges well with baking soda and apple cider vinegar.
- Dry them thoroughly with a paper towel
- Grate only the rind of all your oranges. Make sure no juice gets in because that will spoil the oil.
- Now transfer your rind into your clean dry jar.
- Fill the jar with grapeseed oil, or any other neutral smelling oil like safflower oil or jojoba oil.
- Make sure all the rind is covered in oil.
- Store in a cool dark place for 2 weeks.
- After 2 weeks, strain and transfer to dropper bottles.
- You can allow the oil to infuse even longer. Note that it will get even more potent the longer you infuse it.
