Give your lips some special loving care by making your own nourishing cream using this easy lip salve recipe!
What is a Lip Salve?
A salve is a multi-purpose waxy and solid cream with medicinal properties that is used to moisturize, nourish and heal the skin. It can be used on any part of the skin, including on minor burns, rashes, skin irritations, bug bites and chapped lips. A lip salve is one that is specially designed to cater to the needs of the skin on the lips, which is different from the skin on the rest of the body. Lips salves also help to heal cold sores, hives and rashes on the lips.
How to Make Your Own Homemade Lip Salve
Most lip salves take weeks to make. This is because traditional lip salves were infused with one or more herbs like yarrow root, comfrey, calendula flowers, lavender flowers, rose flowers and more. To infuse these herbs and flowers, the dried herbs would be placed in jars containing olive oil, or other carrier oils and left for several weeks or months for their healing properties to be infused into the oil.
Unfortunately, for many of us living in a busy world, we may not have the time to wait for weeks or months to make a homemade lip salve.
Luckily enough, we have the wonderful healing essential oils that we can put to use instead! Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained by distillation or coldpress of plant material. Often, to obtain 1 drop of essential oil, several pounds of plant material are needed. This is why essential oils have potent medicinal, therapeutic and healing powers, which we can incorporate into our healing lip salve recipe.
Here is a really simple, modern day lip salve recipe that take minutes to make, yet is potent and healing for the lips!
