Why buy overrated and expensive makeup removing wipes, when you can make your own homemade face cleansing wipes that are non-toxic and for a fraction of the price?!
When You’re Too Lazy to Wash Your Face
You know when you come back from a long day of work or evening classes and all you can think of is crashing into bed and drooling off to slumber land? Well that was me as a full time working, part-time studying 19 year old, 7 days a week. I was just too lazy and too exhausted to drag myself to the bathroom and wash my face.
I’m sure you’ve heard it countless times before – sleeping with makeup on is the worst sin in the beauty bible. It wasn’t long before my skin started suffering for it. Tiny acne bumps were breaking out all over my forehead, giant pimples were brewing on my cheeks and the skin under my eyes were starting to get permanent stain of black.
When you’re too lazy to wash your face, you wipe your face instead. And you can do this right on your bed so you can fall asleep immediately afterwards. 😉
Being a complete DIY lazy beauty enthusiast, I got to work on my very own homemade wipes that are absolutely simple to make! I actually used a dozen fist-sized cotton cloths in my normal routine but I found them to be off-setting my acne so now I use disposable wipes or those small circular cotton pads, like in the recipe below.
If you suffer from acne or pimple-prone skin, I recommend using disposable cotton pads. If you have sturdy skin with no worries of acne, go ahead and be all the more economical and ecological by using reusable cotton cloths.
How to Make Your Own Homemade Face Cleansing Wipes
It goes without saying that the homemade face cleansing wipes that we’re going to be making are totally natural. No synthetic fragrances, hormone disrupting stabilizers or carcinogenic preservatives are going to be used for our non-toxic, baby-safe wipes. No, sir! Not today! Instead we’re going to be using:
Hydrosol. A hydrosol is basically a plant or flower water, which is a byproduct of the steam distillation method used in extracting essential oils. Flower hydrosols smell absolutely gorgeous and are rich in so many skin healing compounds like anti-inflammatories, antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that can keep acne at bay.
Coconut oil. Coconut oil is touted to be the trendy panacea of the 21st century, with over hundreds of benefits for all sorts of ailments and problems. Coconut oil supplies the skin with essential fatty acids that hydrate and moisturize the skin from the inside out, prevent premature aging, fight free radical damage and repair and heal damaged skin.
Liquid castile soap. Castille soap is an SLS-free, foaming natural soap substitute made with olive oil and sodium hydroxide. Unlike conventional soap, castile soap is free of SLS (sodium laureth sulfate), which is a DNA damaging, toxic ingredient. Castile soap is also artificial fragrance free and it adds the foaming component to our wipes, helping to get rid of dirt, grime and pollution off the skin.
Essential oils. Essential oils are precious liquids obtained from cold pressing or distilling different plant materials to extract the small pockets of healing oil components within them. Being so potent, essential oils powerful benefits for skin, including reducing puffiness and inflammation, evening out the skin tone, fighting acne causing bacteria, reducing wrinkles and fine lines, fostering skin regeneration and more!
Ingredients
- 1 cup of any flower hydrosol (You can use lavender, rose or orange blossom hydrosols)
- 1/4 cup of fractionated coconut oil (where to get it)
- 1/4 cup of liquid castile soap (where to get it)
- 20 drops of lavender essential oil (where to get it)
- 10 drops of frankincense oil (where to get it)
- 10 drops of geranium essential oil (where to get it)
Note: If you don’t want to use flower hydrosol, for any reason, feel free to use distilled water instead. Or you could use a 50% combination of hydrosol and distilled water. Distilled water is preferred because it lengthens the shelf-life of your wipes and helps hinder bacterial contamination.
Directions
- In a large ball mason jar (16 oz), mix in all the ingredients together with a whisk. Mix in the essential oils last using a straw or glass rod. The reason we won’t be using the whisk or spoon to mix in the essential oils is because we don’t want them to taint food-use cutlery or utensils as essential oils can be toxic if ingested.
- Now in another glass container, get your cloth wipes or round cotton pads (which I recommend for acne prone skin) and line them up nicely for easy removal.
- Gently pour in your cleansing wipe mix into the jar with your cotton wipes/pads until they are fully soaked through with a little more to spare.
- Screw on the lid and keep it on your dresser or bathroom and use every night for a sparkling clean face!
