Did you know that if you drink water you can get clear skin? Drinking water the right way, consistently, gives you many health benefits including detoxing your skin and making it clear and glowing. In this post, we are going to refer to the process of drinking water for health benefits as “water therapy”.
If you’re a busy college student like me, or a general stressed out person who forgets to drink water as often as needed, you may notice that your skin is probably dull, dry, lifeless or even menaced by acne.
Being a natural beauty enthusiast who will do ANYTHING for beautiful, glowing skin and I have recently taken up water therapy and my skin is already glowing and radiant, with many of my friends commenting on my glowing skin!
When I tell them it’s water therapy, they find it hard to swallow (no pun intended!) so I figure the best way to understand the benefits of water therapy for skin is to understand the science behind it!
The Science Behind Water Therapy for Clear Skin
So, what is water therapy, anyway? Is it some kind of wishy-washy new age ‘detox’ concept that has no basis in modern science? Actually, water therapy is not a new age emergence at all! The science of water therapy dates back more than 3,500 years from the ancient science of health and wellbeing, Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, water therapy is termed as, Ushapaan, simply defined as the drinking of water on an empty stomach upon rising from sleep.
In modern times, water therapy took over Japan in waves, as many locals took up the practice of drinking water early in the morning as a popular new health trend with many claimed benefits.
The Beauty Benefits of Water Therapy for Skin & More
- Detoxifies the entire body
- Detoxes the skin, making it clearer
- Flushes out acne and other toxins from the skin
- Clears your colon and gets rid of constipation
- Promotes circulation
- Increases skin elasticity and youthfulness
- Boosts the elasticity and suppleness of skin (dry skin causes immature formation of wrinkles).
- Relief from cellulite
Who Needs Water Therapy?
Water therapy can be greatly beneficial for some people, especially when it comes to helping your skin healthier. You may need water therapy if:
- You have ashy, dull and lifeless skin
- You are menaced by acne, rashes or pimples
- You have dark circles and blemishes that take long to heal
- You suffer from frequent constipation
- You feel tired, fatigued or lethargic
- You are obese, overweight and finding it hard to lose weight
There are many more symptoms and illnesses which are claimed to be cured by water therapy but for the purposes of this post, we shall stick to the beauty benefits of water therapy.
How to Perform Water Therapy
- As soon as you wake up in the morning, you may go to the bathroom, relieve yourself and immediately drink 1.5 litres of purified water. This must be done even before brushing your teeth.
- Now for the important part: For the next 40 – 60 minutes, do not drink or eat anything at all.
- After the time elapses, you may have your breakfast as usual.
Important Pointers
► You can most definitely brush your teeth the night before you sleep.
► During the 40 – 60 minute waiting time, you may perform gentle exercising activities such as yoga, stretching, as well as abdominal massages to stimulate your bowels. This is especially helpful to cure constipation
► Drink the water as soon as you wake up, or within 30 minutes of arising.
► What temperature should the water be? Preferably warm. Do not drink cold water as this is a burden to the body and kills digestive ‘agni’ or fire. Some people drink slightly hot water and this too aids in sloughing off gunk and solidified waste matter from the crevices of the intestines.
► The quality of water to drink: Make sure you avoid direct tap water (filled with chlorine) and mineral water (with dangerous bpa molecules). Drink water purified with a trusted home water purification system.
► You may drink water mixed with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar as these alkalize the body and promote detoxification
► Do not gulp down the water all at once. Rather sit down in a calm place, with a clear mind and sip the water one breath at a time.
► Do not guzzle down the water while standing! This will cause hemorrhoids. Only drink the water in a sitting down position.
► For starting out, 1.5 liters of water may be too much to drink at one time. In this case start out with 2 glasses and build up the amount gradually.
► Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine throughout this therapy.
While it is true that there are no backed up scientific studies to prove the benefits of water therapy, there are many people around the world who testify to the benefits of water therapy. Why hasn’t anyone taken up an independent scientific study on the benefits of water therapy?
May be it’s because there is no money to be made from it. Why hasn’t a cure for cancer been found yet when mankind is already carrying out complex missions in space? May be it’s because there’s more money to be made from sick cancer patients than there is in curing them. You be the judge.
What are the improvements you have seen in your health after taking up water therapy? Please share with us in the comments below so that we can all benefit from your testimony!
Hello, lovely post. One question please….do you do water therapy before or after oil pulling in the am? As in, can you do both (oil pulling and WT?). Or do you alternate practices on difference days?
Hi Ange! Always do oil pulling first, rinse your mouth thoroughly then do the water therapy. Remember oil pulling is best done on an empty stomach! Oil pulling draws the toxins out of the body then water therapy helps flush them out of the body.
Hope I helped! 🙂 Take care xoxo
Yes you did, thanks so much for your response xoxo
Hi there! Very interesting and useful article 🙂
You mentioned it is better to drink warm water. And personally I would also prefer warm water rather than cold…. How do you heat it up? I have a water filter at home (not incorporated into my tap but just a can). I was wondering if it is healthy to heat up water (in the microwave oven) or it would lose its useful properties?
Thank you in advance,
Anya.

Hello Anya! Personally, I don’t use microwave ovens at all when cooking and I wouldn’t use a microwave to heat up my water – it’s not good for your health (Read more here: http://www.medicaldaily.com/microwaves-are-bad-you-5-reasons-why-microwave-oven-cooking-harming-your-health-250145).
Simply heat your water on the stove until its warm or slightly hot.
Take care 🙂
Hi there. I found you’re article in researching methodologies of ushapaan. Some articles I’ve read say to leave the water in a copper pot over night or in a glass container with a copper rod inside. Do you use copper as well?

Benefits of drinking water should be known and apply in our lives which is an essential part of the human life. Research showed that optimal hydration reduces the risk of stroke, manages diabetes and guard against many kinds of cancers.
