3 Shea Butter Homemade Lotion Recipes for Beautiful Skin
1. Easy Olive Oil Shea Butter Lotion Recipe
I hope you fall in love with this easy – probably the easiest – shea butter lotion recipe like I did! It’s intensely moisturizing and incredibly cheap to make at home. However, as you’ll see from the ingredients, this shea butter homemade lotion will turn out less liquid than the next two as it contains only shea butter and olive oil, plus I’ve also added lavender essential oil for its skin soothing properties. Let’s see the benefits of each of the ingredients below:
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil – A great emollient, olive oil is also rich in vitamin E and healthy fatty acids that nourish, moisturize and protect the skin from impurities.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Soothing and calming, lavender is good for sensitive skin types and helps calms inflammation if you suffer from inflammatory skin conditions like eczema. It also has a fresh slightly floral scent that’s okay to use for both men and women.
Ingredients
- 5 oz of raw shea butter (get it here)
- 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil (get it here)
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil *optional* (get it here)
Directions
- Melt the shea butter in a double boiler. Make a makeshift double boiler by resting a small bowl containing the shea butter in a pan of water heated by a low flame.
- Once melted, add the olive oil and lavender essential oil and stir well.
- Pop the bowl containing the ingredients in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
- When you get it out, it should be at least partly solidified.
- Using a hand mixer, whip the ingredients for about 5 minutes till you get a creamy texture.
- Voila! Your homemade shea butter lotion is ready! Use just a tiny amount to moisturize your whole body.
2. Orange Blossom Shea Butter Lotion Recipe
What an amazing citrusy homemade lotion! If you’re the person who loves citrus scents, this shea butter lotion is for you! Check out the ingredients of this homemade lotion and their benefits for skin:
- Orange blossom water – I’m extremely excited to be using orange blossom water, which is a popular Arab flavouring ingredient for both sweet and savory dishes! It’s got lots of beauty benefits for skin including: toning the skin, regulating sebum, cleansing skin, controlling acne and lots more.
- Grapeseed oil – I’ll also be using grapeseed oil because I really like that it has a light consistency and helps enhance the moisturizing qualities of the other ingredients. It is a great moisturizing agent for those with dry skin and also has skin protective and healing qualities that keep germs, acne causing bacteria and pollutants away from the skin.
- Sweet orange essential oil – This citrus essential oil has many skin healing properties including preventing premature aging, treating sensitive skin and fighting acne and pimples.
Ingredients
- 5 oz of raw shea butter (get it here)
- 4 tbsp of orange blossom water (get it here)
- 5 drops of sweet orange essential oil (get it here)
- 1 tsp of grapeseed oil (get it here)
Directions
- Melt the shea butter with the grapeseed oil using a double boiler.
- Place the melted liquids in a blender/food processor and let it cool down completely. Keep it near an open window to speed things up.
- Once cooled, turn on the food processor and while it’s running, slowly pour the orange blossom water into the open end (of the food processor). You’ll see the ingredients forming an emulsion and becoming a thick white lotion!
- Now add the drops of essential oil. After 3-5 minutes or once all ingredients are well incorporated, stop blending.
- Transfer to a clean container. Enjoy!
3. Romantic Rose Shea Butter Lotion Recipe
Anyone who uses the rose water + shea butter combo will instantly fall in love with it! Rose water will make your shea butter lotion smell so amazing and since we’ll also be adding rose essential oil, you’ll have a fresh rose flower scent lingering on your skin all day long! Now let’s look at some of the benefits of all the ingredients we’re going to be using:
- Rose Water – Rose water provides a cooling and soothing sensation when applied to skin which makes it an ideal ingredient for this shea butter homemade lotion. It’s also a natural astringent which keeps your skin fresh by controlling sebum.
- Rose Hip Oil – Rose hip oil contains significant amounts of vitamin C, which boosts collagen and it also contains a high level of fatty acids that helps heal stretch marks, scars and burns. Rose hip oil is known to be very effective against wrinkles and speeds up the healing process of sun damaged skin.
- Rose Essential Oil – This sweet smelling essential oil is known for its amazing ability to increase the skin’s permeability which makes it a great in this shea butter homemade lotion recipe as it helps increase the absorption of nutrients in the other ingredients as well. It is known to beautify the skin, treat acne, promote radiance, heal inflammation, get rid of acne scars and much more!
- Raw Honey – It’s optional but I really recommend using raw honey for its skin nourishing, soothing and healing properties. It’s also a natural humectant, which means it traps moisture from the air and perfectly moisturizes dry skin. Raw honey also helps bind the rest of the ingredients together.
Ingredients
- 5 oz of raw shea butter (get it here)
- 4 tbsp of rose water (get it here)
- 1 tsp of rose hip seed oil (get it here)
- 7 drops of rose essential oil (get it here)
- 1 tsp of raw honey *optional but recommended!* (get it here)
Directions
- Into your food processor, add the raw shea butter, rose hip seed oil, raw honey and organic rose water and blend for about a couple of minutes till smooth.
- There you are! Your shea butter lotion is ready!
- Now all you have to do is transfer to a clean container and stir in the essential oil. Store in a sterilized glass container in a clean dry place.

totally agree about the ‘non lotion consistency’ of most shea butter lotions. I actually spent quite a while searching for a ‘pumpable shea butter’ and it turns out ozone layer hand and body lotion actually meets my two requirements: 1. Is it only shea butter? 2. Does it pump? Yes!!!

Oh I forgot to mention thanks for the great article and recipes 🙂

Help, do you have any recipes for Shea butter using jojoba. Do I need to use an emulsion agent ?
Sheri Johnson says
I used olive oil instead of rosehip. Idont know which one you’re making but jojoba is a great carrier, I’ve used it with Shea recipes
Beautymunsta says
I’m really sorry I didn’t reply you sooner! You can use jojoba oil instead of any of the above oils and you’ll get a good lotion without using any emulsion agents. Hope this helps and take care <3

Soooo…I Just made recipe #3, I guess with a little ofrecipe #1 because I used olive oilinstead of rosehip. And I am in love!! I have been making lotion for maybe two months or so and have been having issues ever since! One problem I was having is that everything was coming out thick. Though they were nice sometimes-most times- I just wanted a lotion I could put on me and my kids without having to dedicate time into massaging it in so much! Also I use lotion every time I was my hands, and I just wanted to get it done. Another thing, my Fiance is allergic to coconuts. So I made recipe three and since I was making it for a man I used olive oil instead o rosehip, and instead of rose water I used oatmeal water (1/4 c old fashioned oats soaked a few hours in water then strained), and for scent I used vetiver, frankincense, and copiaba. And oh my goodness, I could not be happier with the creamy consistency! When you said blend for a few minutes in my head I was like…”watch it really be like 15 minutes”. But it wasn’t! I literally only did it for 3. Now, I did mess up and melt the Shea first and then was like…oh she didn’t say do that….so I just doubled everything! And now have about 16oz of creamy, super moisturizing lotion!! I encourage everyone reading to try this recipe, super simple and you will be pleased. I promise you, I was ready to give up on lotion making if this didn’t work out, but it did. So people wanting to make this and if you don’t have rose water, or are making it for a man oatmeal water works great, blends well and has no scent! So I made his with the vetiver, frankincense and copiaba, and my daughter chose grapefruit. People say citrus oils are phototoxic or something but the amounts I used aren’t concerning to me. Now,after messing up on lotion so many times I need to order more Shea butter so I can make my blend with aromance oil or an aphrodisiac blend I have! Question…will cocoa butter work just as well?
Beautymunsta says
Wow what a long juicy comment! 😀 Lol I enjoyed reading it over my cuppa tea! I’m so so glad you love the recipe and it’s cool that you found good substitutes for the rose hip & rose water! You could also use distilled water instead of rose water. Did you use a preservative since you used oatmeal water? For the blending part, yeah I only meant a couple of minutes haha and melting the shea is totally fine though I didn’t do it that way. To answer your question, yes, you can use cocoa butter and it’ll work just as well!
Thanks so much for coming back with your feedback and I’m really happy you like it! Take care 🙂
