DIY Shea Butter Hair Pomade

Pomade comes from the French word pommade meaning ‘ointment.’ With this, you can already tell the texture of hair pomade. It’s a waxy substance perfect for styling short hair and making it shhhiiine. It’s good for all hair types but Type 4 hair really benefits from it since it has long lasting moisturizing powers!

In the DIY shea butter hair pomade below, we’re going to be using all natural ingredients from Mother Nature. So you don’t worry about product build-up or chemical nasties on your hair! Yippee!

This shea butter hair pomade also gives light to medium hold so it’s just right to use. If you want more hold, all you gotta do is add 1 tsp more beeswax.

DIY Shea Butter Hair Pomade

Learn how to make a cheap and super easy DIY shea butter hair pomade right at home! It gives light to medium hold!

What you need

  • 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles (where to get it)
  • 1 ½ tbsp shea butter (where to get it)
  • 1 tsp jojoba oil (where to get it)
  • 1 tsp vegetable glycerin (where to get it)
  • 10 drops essential oil of choice (such as wild orange, lavender, sandalwood and lemongrass!)
  • Double boiler (where to get it)
  • Round salve tin (where to get it)

Why These Ingredients?

Beeswax – Traditionally, hair pomade was made using wax or lanolin. This is the base ingredient that makes the ingredient firm and gives holding power.

Shea butter – A soft butter, shea is intensely moisturizing and melts with body temperature. It keeps the hair pomade from being too hard. It’s also rich in nutrients for healthy hair.

Vegetable glycerin – This ingredient is a natural humectant. It prevents the hair pomade from being too greasy. Plus it helps add more texture.

Jojoba oil – This oil is an excellent moisturizer. It resembles the sebum secreted from the scalp. It softens the pomade to give it a good consistency and it is also a ‘dry’ oil which means the pomade won’t be greasy.

Essential oil – You can’t not add essential oils. They’ll give your pomade an amazing scent! I like to add wild orange, sandalwood, and lemongrass oils. These are all masculine or unisex scents. If you want a feminine scent, geranium is the one of the best.

Directions

  1. Using the double boiler, gently melt the beeswax pastilles, shea butter and jojoba oil to liquid form.
  2. Once that’s achieved, remove from heat and stir in the vegetable glycerin.
  3. Now drop in the essential oil and stir well.
  4. Pour the liquid into a salve tin or glass jar and store in a cool dry place.
  5. To use, rub a suitable amount between your fingers then apply on hair. Style as usual and you’re ready to go!

So go ahead and make your own DIY shea butter hair pomade! Make your hair look and feel fabulous!
