If you’re a busy college student like me, or a general stressed out person who forgets to drink water as often as needed, you may notice that your skin is probably dull, dry, lifeless or even menaced by acne. Being a natural beauty enthusiast who will do ANYTHING for beautiful, glowing skin and I have recently taken up water therapy and my skin is already glowing and radiant, with many of my friends commenting on my glowing skin! When I tell them it’s water therapy, they find it hard to swallow (no pun intended!) so I figure the best way to understand the benefits of water therapy for skin is to understand the science behind it!
The Science Behind Water Therapy for Skin & More
So, what is water therapy, anyway? Is it some kind of wishy-washy new age ‘detox’ concept that has no basis in modern science? Actually, water therapy is not a new age emergence at all! The science of water therapy dates back more than 3,500 years from the ancient science of health and wellbeing, Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, water therapy is termed as, Ushapaan, simply defined as the drinking of water on an empty stomach upon rising from sleep.
In modern times, water therapy took over Japan in waves, as many locals took up the practice of drinking water early in the morning as a popular new health trend with many claimed benefits.

How to Perform Water Therapy
– As soon as you wake up in the morning, you may go to the bathroom, relieve yourself and immediately drink 1.5 litres of purified water. This must be done even before brushing your teeth.
– Now for the important part: For the next 40 – 60 minutes, do not drink or eat anything at all.
– After the time elapses, you may have your breakfast as usual.
► You can most definitely brush your teeth the night before you sleep.
► During the 40 – 60 minute waiting time, you may perform gentle exercising activities such as yoga, stretching, as well as abdominal massages to stimulate your bowels. This is especially helpful to cure constipation
► Drink the water as soon as you wake up, or within 30 minutes of arising.
► What temperature should the water be? Preferably warm. Do not drink cold water as this is a burden to the body and kills digestive ‘agni’ or fire. Some people drink slightly hot water and this too aids in sloughing off gunk and solidified waste matter from the crevices of the intestines.
► The quality of water to drink: Make sure you avoid direct tap water (filled with chlorine) and mineral water (with dangerous bpa molecules). Drink water purified with a trusted home water purification system.
► You may drink water mixed with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar as these alkalize the body and promote detoxification
► Do not gulp down the water all at once. Rather sit down in a calm place, with a clear mind and sip the water one breath at a time.
► Do not guzzle down the water while standing! This will cause hemorrhoids. Only drink the water in a sitting down position.
► For starting out, 1.5 liters of water may be too much to drink at one time. In this case start out with 2 glasses and build up the amount gradually.
► Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine throughout this therapy.
While it is true that there are no backed up scientific studies to prove the benefits of water therapy, there are many people around the world who testify to the benefits of water therapy. Why hasn’t anyone taken up an independent scientific study on the benefits of water therapy? May be it’s because there is no money to be made from it. Why hasn’t a cure for cancer been found yet when mankind is already carrying out complex missions in space? May be it’s because there’s more money to be made from sick cancer patients than there is in curing them. You be the judge.
