Learn how to make homemade amla oil for longer and fuller hair!
Amla oil is something you probably haven’t ever heard of! It’s a homemade product that has been prepared in the Indian subcontinent since ages ago. It’s made just for hair care!
What is Amla?
Amla is a fruit. It’s originates in the Indian subcontinent. It’s also called Indian gooseberry and has 20 times more Vitamin C than orange juice (source)! I know right, WOW! This is the reason why I got interested in amla powder in the first place. It is a powerful superfood!
The amla fruit is quite hard to find outside of India but amla powder, which is got from drying and grinding amla fruits is common around the world! If you can’t find it in Indian stores in your locality, then you’ll definitely find it online.
What is Amla Oil?
Okay so now we know what amla is, you’re probably wondering what amla oil is right? Well, it’s not an oil extracted from amla. It’s actually something homemade. It is an infusion of amla into any carrier oil of your choice. Just like how you would get rosemary oil by infusing rosemary sprigs in olive oil.
There are two ways of infusing amla – one is using the fresh fruit and the other is using the powder. There are also two methods of making amla oil – infusing it for 3 weeks and infusing it over the stove top! We shall see how to make homemade amla oil using the best, easiest and most popular method below!
Now let’s check out the benefits of amla oil for hair!

How to Make Homemade Amla Oil
Since amla fruits are hard to come across (except if you live in India and have access to them), we’re going to be using amla powder to make homemade amla oil.
In this post, I’m going to show you how to make amla oil by heating amla powder in coconut oil over low heat then straining it into a bottle/jar. Now this method is the easiest, best, most popular and my personal favorite!
We shall be adding fenugreek powder because this also has lots of benefits such as delaying gray hairs, fighting hair loss and promoting a healthy scalp. If you don’t want it, you can leave it out.
What you need
- 1 cup liquid coconut oil
- 2 tbsp amla powder
- 1 tbsp fenugreek powder
- 20 drops lavender essential oil *optional
- 10 drops geranium essential oil *optional
- Pan
- Heat source
- Fine mesh plastic strainer
- Clean mason jar or bottle for storage
Directions
- Pour the coconut oil in a pan. Put the pan on the stove at a low heat.
- Once the mixture starts warming up, add 1 tbsp of amla powder and fenugreek powder.
- Stir it well so the mixture turns brown.
- Turn off the heat before the mixture starts boiling.
- Let the powders steep for 40 minutes.
- When it has completely cooled down, strain the oil into a clean dry container to collect only the amla oil.
- Pour the amla oil into a clean jar or bottle. Now you can add your essential oils (to improve the herbal scent of your amla oil & offer more healthyhair benefits) then close the container and shake it well to mix everything up. Essential oils are totally optional.
- It’s ready for use! Use this oil as a scalp massage oil, hot oil treatment, overnight hair mask, daily hair oil and more!
